Hello thanks for the reply digits 8-13, 8 being a number 5 is that part of the production numbers being the total number of Vettes produced and 9-13 being the amount of 72 production?

The 5 is a check digit for lack of a better word, all 72 Corvettes had a 5 there. 1972 production ran from 00001 - 27004.

1Z37K2S500001
1Z37K2S527004

Someone with more knowledge than me would have to answer that one but I believe digit 8 is an 'S' not a '5'. Looks like the article used both characters in the example for some reason.

Thanks TM1400, Yea digit 8 is a 5 representing the total number of Vettes produced so in your example 517,847 vettes produced since 1953 and 17847 being the production number for the car in 1972.

The 5 in 517,847 does not represent the total amount of Corvettes built since 1953. The 5 is just a check digit.

1969 used a 7, 700001
1970 used a 4, 400001
1971 used a 1, 100001
1972 used a 5, 500001

are you sure about that??? Lloyd Raymond? because the first car was 500001, NOT THE 5000,000 CORVETTE MADE. They just start with a 500000 to give reference, so to speak.
unless you have found out something different. My 76 is 409056, so did they wreck over 100,000 cars and start over on that number?

Oh, by the way WELCOME to the forum!

My mistake on the S vs 5. I missed the S as digit #7

My 68 uses a 4 as that digit. I searched production numbers and found something like 187k built prior to 68.

Actually, other than Pontiac, GM kept lousy records. Ford and Chrysler kept far better records.
