After reading many posts and searching the WWW. does anybody know if any companies actually sell the repair sections for the lower front birdcage repair on my 1980 coupe. Does anyone know if they have to be fabricated, any help would be appreciated.
ask Willcox corvettes(supporting vendor here) if they don't have them, they might need to be custom made, not a biggie for a metal fab person. Many have done it.
but just how bad is the car ? do you have some pics to share here ? lots of experienced guys here can help with a free assessment if you post pics up. What I'm saying is it may not be as bad as you think , there's some clever guys here who fix those cages all the time !
Yes I do, and I think I found what I am looking for. I have to look at the rusted area, I will post some pics here later today for any other suggestions from some experienced people.... which I am not, lol
Read the 10 rules sticky. Shows the places to look, and what really bad ones look like...
Well derekderek after reading that all I can say is I wish I had that knowledge before I purchased the car and started buying repair parts. So with that being said, I'm fairly sure it's not going anywhere anytime soon. Generally I do all of my work on my cars so there will be no taking it to someone for repair so I will be looking forward to the knowledge and expertise from the forum members, I'm sure it will be a learning experience....LOL.
Hello, Not looking to bring you down, beat you up or anything like that. Some advise from a rookie but you may want to look over the rest of the car from top to bottom. Rust usually is not limited to one local, your windshield frame may be in serious trouble as well as other lcactions. To my limited experience that is alot of damage. Unless the car is unique, rare or special to you, the cost to repair may outstrip its value even if you do the work yourself.
Examine and photograph the car well and post to the forum for advise before you get in too deep. Good luck!!! Ike

that's bad , you need to start thinking of where your going to do the repair because it will be sitting there for quite a while and be unmovable (apart from pushing it ). Think grinding/cutting and welding and lots of dust and sparks everywhere.
Some pics from further away as well .Those are scary !
Part that car out and buy a better one. 80's aren't worth the time-effort-expense that one will cost you. If you insist on saving it, pull the body, repair the frame and find a better body-birdcage. If that car needs suspension, interior, engine work, don't even think about rehabbing it.
My birdcage was as bad as yours.
Zip had the repair sections, although I made them myself, as for the shipping+ import price to Belgium it would've costed more than buying a different vette.
You'll probably have to remove the front clip too to repair everything properly.
It's not too bad of a job imho, just a pain. But the reward is worth it. Goodluck!
