Default Paint, strange but true

My '77 had broken passenger side mirror, found replacement but not a white one. Went to auto paint store and checked about 25 shades of white but no match (not original color on car) so took broken mirror to (almost afraid to say it here) Home Depot and the scanner came up with a paint code. Paint dept. manager said try Behr water based high gloss enamel, I said it is for a car not a house...trust me he said, it will work. Went home with a quart and tried touching up a door chip, went back later and couldn't find the spot. I do plan on going back to auto paint store tomorrow with # to get a quart of acrylic enamel to paint mirror and to touch up a few spots. The house paint may work but as hard as it was to get that broken sport mirror off never want to have to do it again so I'll stick to auto paint, maybe my wife can use the HD paint to paint a dresser or something inside the house.

Why didn't the auto paint store do a scan for you?

Local Sherman Williams Auto paint store has no paint scanner, when I said Home Depot has one, why not you guys, was told it would be nice. Said that if I got the code they could mix it....we'll see.

Why not use the water base enamel, , many auto paints are the same, , with proper care, it will last as long as any other coating on the car,

I do now have two passenger side mirrors, may as well try it on one to see what happens.

You could try a clear coat over the top of it to give it a little extra protection

Thank you Home Depot, this may just work....

Door was messed up a bit, looks OK now

Nose was banged up, works for me. Entire car will be buffed out and waxed after paint hardens.

I remember that story very well. He built a convertible from a coupe and painted it with a roller. He sanded and buffed it with decent results.

I did put clear coat over paint but gave it a slight yellow tint, good for now probably paint entire car in year or so...with auto paint.

You are correct. And lately, I've been shooting some Rustolem thinned out through my Harbor Freight HVLP gun with excellent results. While we're on the subject, Home depot can also scan and mix up some oil base enamel as well.
