Default Heater Thumbwheel Rubbing.

I took apart the center console and when I reinstalled it the heater control thumbwheel is rubbing against the shifter linkage. The heater control assembly is sitting too low therefore either I installed the whole console too low or the housing the holds the heater control assembly. Is there a sequence I missed upon reassembly? In other words, how do I get the console to sit higher so it raises the heater control assembly?

No reply, therefore I guess nobody has encountered this problem before?

Mine also did the same thing

Just touched where the cable end stepped up.

In my case it was because I added hushmat and insulation under the shifter plate and it raised it just enough to touch. I removed the mat and insulation right under where the front mounted and it was clear

You could also find that the entire console is down, this is usually controlled by the center gage cluster which is in turn affected by the steering column and upper dash brace, try a washer or two between the upper brace and the dash pad, that'll raise the gage cluster slightly and allow the shifter console to go up a little

Thanks for the reply Mooser;

I have taken the whole dash apart and although the holes in the dash lined up upon reinstallation I will take your advice on shimming the center console etc to raise that section. Maybe this weekend should I be able to find the time.

I don't know how close they are when they are "right" but I have to think they don't clear by a whole lot. The extra material under mine was probably only 1/8" and it caused it to rub fairly hard so even now it must be pretty close to touching

As it stands now the thumb wheel rubs so hard I have to apply excessive force to move it, therefore I would need it raised maybe 1/4", at least.

Certainly sounds like the dash is pushing the shift console too low.
Also check the parkbrake console and make sure it's sitting in the right spot fore/aft as that might affect the wheel to cable spacing as well

I had the same problem with my 75. Found that the PO had taken the console out to replace the carpet and left the front brace out.

Pa'svette

Thanks for the suggestion, that was my first thought and the first thing I checked and it was in place.
