Hey all, basic question. I need help with some starter issues I’m having. The car has a 383 stroker and recently the starter would cut out. I put in a remanufactured model from O’Reilly’s. Long/short it still won’t turn over. I checked the ground on the starter and the battery, cleaned and tightened everything down. I then had the battery tested and it’s fine. Im wondering if it’s the ignition itself but hoping you all might have some troubleshooting ideas I could run down before I start replacing/tearing things out. Thanks!
You need to tell us what exactly your starter is doing or not doing. Simply stating that it’s cutting out makes it difficult to diagnose your problem. These cars are known to have ground issues and many have parts missing that you need to complete the connection to enable your car to start. I’d begin by removing and cleaning the negative battery cable where it connects to the frame and go from there. Check to be sure that you’re not missing the ground cable that goes from the block to the frame. It may have been missed when the engine was swapped out. If all the grounds are good check your fusible links and make sure they’re intact. If you don’t have one you should buy the Assembly Instruction Manual (AIM) for your car and a chassis service manual. Both these are very helpful with these older cars. Good luck.
Well, the bottom line is the starter is doing absolutely nothing. The old one used to cut in and out. The new one does absolutely nothing. It’s like it isn’t getting power. When the key is turned, all the lights stay on, headlights work, everything but the starter doesn’t turn over at all.
I will go down that quick list tonight, and order one of those manuals. Thank you again for the help.
