I am looking at a '71 here in my area and would like a Carfax (or something like it) I only have a 13 character VIN taken from the registration, they want 17.

What am I missing?

CarFax only goes back to 1980. No info available on older cars.

Thank you, I was aware of the changes in VIN's and such, but thought that might be some alternate source for the information.

try posting as many picture as possible of the car on this site and get some opinions. Pictures should include, interior, exterior, frame, suspension front and back, engine pad with partial VIN and engine code. For more direct help contact a local Corvette club and see if any of the members can go with you to look at the car.

You can always check the VIN against the 71 Corvette Directory to see if it has data on the car, owner, etc. I had mine posted there and it was helpful.

Consider completing your information as well so we know where "near me" might be, others in the area may know the car.

Instavin works for pre-1980 vin numbers. About all you could expect to see though, is whether the car has changed hands frequently since the electronic records started. In my case, all it showed was me titling the car, mileage 'exempt', and the previous owner titling it in 2004, mileage 'exempt'.
