Default Drop Lights

I'm looking for a new drop light. I've been using a combo of flashlights propped up on the ground, held in my teeth, phone lights, etc. I'm ready for something better. What are you guys using that you'd recommend?

My droplight is nothing special. I believe I got it off the shelf at Wally World back when the Ice Age ended. I've never had a problem with it.

I'd look for LED to avoid heat.

I'd look for methods to point the light to the needed area.
Magnets, hooks to hang and stands all come to mind!

Built in retractor is great to have. Have one hanging in center of garage with LED stick on it. Probably came from Harbour Freight.

Honestly best investment ever - Elastic head band light. Cheapie gag gift but just perfect. Keeps both hands free, very portable, inexpensive, has click stops for up/down setting. I will never be without it again.

Drop lights are so 1980's... lol... Buy a rechargeable shop/garage light and you never have to deal with an electrical cord gain. Just plug it in when finished and it's ready for next time. 100's to choose from on eBay and Amazon. I prefer a light with a hook, a stand and a magnet with allows it to be used just about anywhere.

I also have a headlamp in the top of the toolbox which is awesome, particularly when working in tight places like under the dash.

YMMV

I use a halogen floor light wired to a rafter in my garage for anything under the hood.
for additional light I use my Dewalt flash light with the heavy 19v battery in the base.
my drop light has one of the florescent bulbs in it to avoid turning it into a branding iron as a filament bulb does.

You already know this, but......

turn off any light that is in/on/under the car when you leave the garage. Another Forum member's car burned to a crisp when he left a halogen light on overnight.

( I had a bad habit of leaving a light on in the engine bay )

The thing I miss the least about filament bulbs. Drop the light, buy a new bulb. LED are near indestructable.

LEDs are the best, you dont get burned, they are bright as hell, and you can get a long life out of the bulb and the battery charge if you use rechargeables.
If you want a drop light you can buy led bulbs for them that are directional. I added LEDs to my old D cell flashlights and my 18 volt dewalt lights

If you have a harbor freight nearby, I use their old stick light, similar to this

https://www.harborfreight.com/845-lu...ght-63990.html

I just bought a small rechargeable had held at lowes. I've had other versions and these get used the most since they dont roll and can sit next to my head/face while on my back up under the dash

https://www.lowes.com/pd/Cat-600-Lum...ght/1000279319

I bought this LED folding work light at costco. The 2 wings fold and rotate so you can aim it where you need it, it plugs in but it has charging ports for USB and 110 outlets so it acts like an extension cord
https://www.costco.com/Winplus-LED-F...100375504.html

I also keep small LED flashlights about that I can grab to look at dark corners quickly

The only complaint is they are so bright you will see spots or a while if you look at them

I'm using a NAPA NBC85911 blue fuel LED rechargeable 10 led work light. My corded one was a PIA. Saw it on sale and decided to give it a shot. Great light, magnetic base, hook and back magnets, 360 tilt and swivel, no broken bulbs, housing cleans easily and holds a long charge on low setting with plenty of light. Can be a bit difficult in some locations to find a bit of steel or a place for the hook(s) to attach with all that fiberglass but it can be done and it's nice not to have to deal with the cord. It's on sale currently for Father's day $39.99 (reg $76.49). It comes with a 120 and also a 12V USB charger for a lighter socketl.

Details:

360 LED Cordless Work Light
  • 10 Super Bright SMD LEDs
  • Charging Point For 120V AC and 12 Volt Chargers
  • 400 Lumens High
  • 200 Lumens Low
  • Charging/Operating Time 4/3 Hours
  • Multifunction Switch for High/Low and Torch Function
  • Two Swivel Hooks
  • Rechargeable Lithium Ion Battery
  • Unique Ball Joint Enables 360 Swivel and Tilt
  • Two Rear and End Mounted Super Strong Magnets
  • 3 Watt Torch Function

LEDs to keep the heat down, and a head-mounted light. Those work great when my kids don't steal them first.

Also, an LED underhood bulb. It may be an 1156. Get a nice one.
