80 Speedo Questions
I have a 79 Speedo and the faceplate. Is it possible for me to just put the face plate on and change the speed gear in the tranny? I have been told the 79 Speedo is junk due to plastic parts but I really do not know if that is really the case.
The 79 Speedo I have has a broken needle and the person I spoke to suggested I ship both of them to him. He said it will make a rebuild easier because of having parts if needed.
To me it sounds a lot easier to just put the 79 faceplate on and change a gear if that is possible.

Someone should be able to answer this as I know I am not the only that has done this.

I don't see why you couldn't interchange parts between the two... they're both still cable-driven, aren't they ? This video from Willcox gives a good idea how everything comes apart and goes together. Also, if you aren't already aware of it, there are 2 speedo drive gears, the one in the tail of the transmission (drive gear), and the one in the speedo pickup on the trans (driven gear). There are a range of driven gear sizes that are interchangeable, so altering the ratio is easy to do without having to get into the trans to change the drive gear.
