Default '68 VIN question

Is it possible that a convertible and coupe can share the same VIN with the exception of the 4th digit?

Seems unlikely. If the only difference is the 4th digit it seems as though they would continue without any duplicate VIN being created.

I used an internet VIN decoder on an existing Vin number that included the "3".

Then I changed the 4th digit from "3" into a "6". The decoder showed the "3" to be a coupe and the "6" to be a convertible.

That does not mean that the convertible actually exists, even though the decoder identified it.

Thanks for the replies.
The reason I ask is that a '68 convertible advertised on craigslist included a VIN, and my Google search of that VIN brought me to the C3 registry, where the VIN's 4th digit was the only difference, and was assigned to a coupe. I thought that was strange so I figured I'd inquire.
Scam of some sort?

No. No two vehicles had the same consecutive unit number.

Not in the same body anyway. The last 5 or 6 will probably repeat from a Nova to a Vette to an Impala, but the digit before the serial is different. It is possible that coupe has had roofectomy, and somebody got 3 changed to 6 by claiming a mistake was made previously. Unlikely though. This scares me. Run.
