Default New to me 1974 C3 corvette

I have had a few vettes, Currently, my 2014 stingray is a favorite, although it's modified and making 740 rwhp - I'm not really a classic car fella or one for keeping things factory stock... but I've always loved the c3 body. I was at a local auto auction and a fella brought this in last minute, I was able to get it for what I think is a decent price.... decent enough for me to bring it home.

1974 C3 corvette - 32,700 original miles, 3sp auto, original motor - carb is a 640

I don't know much about these cars but I know I liked it and wanted to share.

The rear bumper isn't original, if I'm not mistaken the 74 originally had the split rear - when I was talking to the fella before the auction went on he told me the car was backed into by one of his workers in the driveway and he broke the bumper, so when he replaced it he painted the whole car. It was originally white but is not the dark red color from the c7 corvettes, decent paint job - deep in the jams, very pretty color in my opinion. The previous owner also completely restored the interior which is almost color matched to the car.

The flaws - Driven it for 3 days now, today there's a slight backfire occurring occasionally. This may be the half a tank of premium gas with ethanol it ran for the last two days (even though the issue just started) I'm clueless when it comes to carbs so I'm taking it to a buddy of mine next week to have the engine gone over and tuned up. The AC also doesn't work as the clutch for the old system is frozen. Probably going to convert it to r134 - it's hot here in South Carolina. Also, the driver's side seatbelt is stuck and won't come out of the floor

Paint is pretty, needs a good buff, some spidering on the rear bumper has me considering finding a 74 correct rear end and spraying and blending it. Other than that, there are a few small blemishes. Not a collector's piece to go through barret Jackson - but definitely gorgeous from 5 feet away. I feel like this is a c3 that was made to be driven and enjoyed, not one I'd hide in my garage.

The car also has an aftermarket cd player and aftermarket wheels, and what looks to me like updated brakes. I'll be excited to dig into it this week and start working on the little things. Just wanted to share. Nothing like my c6 and 7's that I've owned... but boy I really enjoy it for some reason.
thanks!

This car is 11 years older than I am and looks way better than I do

I wouldn't bother swapping the rear bumper. The dividing line in the center of bumper will only be missed by the purists you claim not to be. Send the carb to Lars. Very good engine builder and q-jet artiste. Check if front bumper has been replaced. Probably has. The urethane 73-75 bumpers all dissolved and fell apart. Even the lifetime garage queens. Nice color. White is nice too, but too common.

So what's a 640 carb?

now thats a question i couldn't answer, not entirely sure what a holly 740 is either, and my good friend asked me if it was a quadrajet. I honestly am clueless without fuel injection.

its going to be a learning experience for me lol

looks fine, buff it out, tune up the engine and drive it. leave the rear bumper alone the originals were ugly. also looks like the front bumper was blended in (no lines). the only thing I'd do is swap out the 3 speed for a 4 speed.

Oh back bumper is 80-82. Took em 6 years to figure out how to make a pretty rear bumper that passed the idiotic 5mph law. Don't go back.

I agree with everybody else on the bumpers. I put a 73-74 front bumper and 80-82 rear bumper on my 75 convertible. I also glass in them to the body for no parting line.

I think your car looks great, I wouldn't change it.

Welcome to the 74 club.
And yes I still have that "ugly" rear bumper, but since it's a one year item, I'm sticking with it.
