Back in the 60's when many cars came with, or were optioned with space-saver spares those bottles were included to be able to inflate them. I purchased a '69 Mustang Mach I "parts car" in 1975 and when I was through putting it back together, I tried sticking a spare tire in the trunk. It took up 1/3 of the already small trunk. Our dealer reminded me that they were also available with one of these space saver spares.
Unfortunately he wanted way more than I thought it was worth and went to our local salvage yard and asked if they had any. They just happened to have a beautiful low mileage wreck with one in the trunk that had never been used and sold it to me for $25. It was missing the air bottle, so I carried a small compressor instead. It fit nicely in the right rear of the trunk and took up about half the usable space a normal spare did, Fortunately I never found the need to use it. Although I was tempted to inflate it just to see how it looked, I was more concerned with it not returning to it's original size so I never did.
Great find, does it have any identifying marks on it saying which vehicle it came with?
I can't find anything to identify it. The label is in pretty bad shape. It is genuine GM parts. Perfect for a restoration needing original air. I wonder what the pressure rating of the bottle is. It has to be pretty high to fill a tire from that little bottle.
LOL, I have one of those along with the space saver spare that look brand new in the trunk of my ‘79 TA. of course I would never dream of trying to use it. If I remember correctly those tire fillers were a one time use just like the space saver spare, it was just enough to get you to a shop. A full size spare would never fit in my trunk, the space saver just fits.
