Ignatz, try Dougs Custom paint in Chatsworth next time. Hes been doing vettes forever,super happy with his work. Even his insurance work is way better than a "good" paint job.

Don’t get me wrong. I love my Vette, and I spend the money on it when I can. But 20 grand. Really. Was looking at a nice 69 vert today in the for sale section. 16 grand or best offer. If I had to come up with 20 thousand for a paint job, thinking I would find another hobby. 20,000$ paint job = Ludicrous

NICE IS IN THE EYE OF THE BEHOLDER. The guy ask if the price quoted was fair which it is. Most of the time you pay for what you get & get what you pay for. I love it when people say "Can you believe I did it myself & I say yes I can I really can."

My vette sets in the garage 5 daze outta any given week, insured for only 15k, is the paint PURRfect?? no, but when it goes out, folks admire it, call it a ten-ten car.....you know, ten feet away at ten mph, looks GRAND..... is it stock?? HELL NO, how BORing......is it updated? HELL YES!!! is the frame solid....hell yes, all the sloppy factory welding been gone over nicely, is it fun to drive....HELL YES!!!! Does my wife like driving with the top down?? NO, scared her hair may get messed up, I don't have such issues, age 74, she is 68......

To the OP, Corvette shops cost $100 plus per hour, just saying.
If you do some of the work the costs go down.
If you put 20K into this car is it worth it ?
DIY ? I have $2,500 into this paint job, i did the bodywork, paid $500 to a members son on the forum who does this for living..
I am not a baller, i do my own stuff.. And am extremely happy with the finished project.
Yes, its a driver and Not a show car, but am very happy with the outcome.

My experience - $25K after I stripped the paint.
Was that reasonable - No
Can I get a complete strip and paint for less than $20K - No
Unless to can do all the labor yourself you're going to be dropping upwards of $20K for a paint job.

Did all the work myself and wouldn't do it again, provided I could find somebody I trusted. You really want to check your shop out throughly and make sure you know what they are quoting in writing. Materials alone cost me $5K and with labor I can see $20K for what you describe. As to doing it yourself, only if you have done this before and know what mistakes to avoid. It is somewhat harrowing and you need to follow the paint mfgr's process.
You didn't mention the color, metallics are tricky. Also here in CA in my area, water-based paints are required, which put me off considerably as to who did what.

Stripping paint now and doing body work which is almost complete. Getting ready to prime, surface and block next. Then BC/CC hopefully in this century.
Of course I am a body/paint newbie, first time, slower than watching paint dry, and a perfectionist or trying to be, and I will say it is a LOT, a LOT of work. So, I am beginning to better understand that Corvette painters earn every nickel. And I know one painter that says he will NOT paint Corvettes anymore as the customers are TOO picky and never happy with the results, hmmmm……
Anyway suggest you do some research, maybe you might want to do some or all of the work yourself. If you only do the prep, I think it is good to talk to whoever does the final paint coat to get an agreement.

Would I do a body off on a 67 300 HP no option corvette hell no . Would I do the same for a documented 435 with original drive train hell yes. There is the ability to do to your car what you want & for the purpose one wants fun driver, show car or NCRS type shows.

One thing I learned the hard way, it costs just as much to restore a 75, 76 or a 77 as it does a 68 or 69 tri power. Of course the amount of money invested is not the only component to think about here, but it is important to at least keep in mind for me.

I just finished mine, drive in/drive out, strip to bare fiberglass, body work/prep, color change, show quality....I’d say 99.8% perfect. 332 man hours, $4800 in paint supplies. $25,185 total and I tipped them $400 so $25,585 OTD. Took 4 months, start to finish.
$15-20k is the average price down here in Houston for an on frame paint job.
Then I had about $4400 in chrome/stainless work and about $5000 in misc parts...(weatherstripping, glass, lights, emblems, trim etc etc)
I don’t care if it’s worth it or not, I wanted nice paint on a car I’ll never sell, it’s done right and how I want it. I paid for quality and piece of mind. Cars are not investments, they are toys. If you are worried about losing money on a classic car, you are in the wrong hobby.

I tell people the same thing all of the time. Stay away from cars that need any kind of paint and body work, unless you are a paint and body guy yourself. Otherwise you will quickly get upside down on most C3 purchases..unless it’s a #s matching BB car. Investment wise, you’ll lose your *** if it needs paint. However, if it’s a car you really want for whatever reason, then go for it and don’t sweat it, just know it’s gonna be high and you’ll be upside down. C2s are another story...

I had a 72 years ago and had it painted by a guy went to HS with and all he does for the most part are Vettes...had it done maybe 18 yrs ago and it cost me $6.500 to strip and paint it and it needed zero bodywork ( bonding seams perfect) and he told me at the time it was the cleanest 72 he'd seen. I can image it'll cost much more like anything else these days.
