Yes, it is possible without removing engine components...but depending on condition of the motor you may need better access to remove grease and grime to actually see the stamp. I'd show you a picture but I'm not with 82 today.
You are looking for a pad on the engine block just below the smog pump and a/c compressor. Follow the valve cover on passenger side to the front of the engine and look below where the head meets the block. I've used a rag, long handle screw driver and spray cleaner such as 409 to clean the pad when checking out a car.
