Buy the books A.I.M. and Service Manual at least.
Run all the code numbers on the car.
Get a wiring diagram.
Get a vacuum diagram
The only thing that 'irks' us, is asking questions that are clearly covered in those two books.
I have the AIM manual. Got the wiring diagram from papawana. I dont have a vacuum diagram yet, but since this car has electric headlight popups i shouldn't need much in the way of vacuum schematics.
Yanked the gas tank out today. Didn't get a picture of the sock itself, but it was just about a solid mass and stained rust red. You could squeeze it and feel sediment inside. Replaced it, cleaned the sender unit, cleaned the inside of the tank (which still had the green sealant in great shape). The outside looked really good. I don't think the car has seen a lot of rain. There's nothing but the barest surface rust on anything I've come across on the gas tank or anywhere on the frame or on the rear end (that I got a good look at today) or the front end or anywhere else that I've seen. I shot some aluminum color rust inhibitant on the tank, particularly on the seams. Re-installed the tank and whatdaya know, the car can suck gas again with the mechanical pump.
I also snagged the rear speaker covers to re-do.
Kinda sucks that the car is not nearby and my time is limited, but It sure felt nice to make some progress.
Tank out, build tag intact. Its really clean under there Old carpet next to new carpet. Gonna paint it and them 3M the carpet on.
Redoing the brakes. Powdercoated and rebuilt the calipers. New bearings and seals up front. New rotors, pads, lines and e-brake cable. I have new e-brake shoes on order, but they're not in yet, so i couldn't finish the rear end. The front end has all new bushings. I have a kit to redo the rear end and some KYB shocks to put on.
Worked inside. Got the rear carpet in, pulled all the halo trim and inner window surrounds and painted them. Speakers are in placed and wired. Its nice to see some tangible progress
Interior stuff.
The car came with extra door panels. They're repros with a manufacture date of 1989 on them.
They were in mostly good shape. There was a slight tear at the bottom of one and the plastic backing had some cracks along the curve at the bottom. I used some vinyl repair on the tear and a lot of plastic weld to re-enforce the panels. I dyed them (Camel) and they look really good now. I went with a darker color on the carpet.
The storage compartment doors were broken in a million pieces. I order new trim, re-covered the doors and re-assembled it all together.
What's this plastic weld of which you speak? Have you used it before and does it last well?

Jb weld plastic weld. Works great. I havent had time to evaluate how it works on door panels that slam over and over, but for household stuff its never failed me.
Getting this seat assembled. It was disassembled and in bags. I gotta say, neither seat is in horrible shape. The previous owner didn't beat the hell out of this car, and what was disassembled was tagged and bagged. A couple of tears on the seams on both driver's and passenger seats, but not lousy at all. I am waiting on another can of dye before i finish this seat.
You’re welcome. FYI, I’m not sure how it’s done, but I think we can now change our thread titles without moderator assistance. Either way, you might consider changing the title to some kind of “Rebuild Thread” to get more interest and input on your project. I realize this started over in the Intro forum and got moved to C3 General.
You’ve done some very nice work. A title change might bring in more forum members for the ride. Keep the pictures coming. She’s looking better and better!
