Converting 1981 from automatic to 5 speed. Have new engine coming(383 stroker) Looking for suggestions on what transmission to buy. Any and all help appreciated
Your conversion can be anywhere from a DIY piece by piece, make the part work budget build to a high $$$$ kit containing pretty much everything that's needed.
I also used the trans Dynra Rockets used. Been 7 years and zero problems. For my car and driving its just fine. Plenty of my pics are here on the forum if you go that route. Just use the search function. Sent you a private message, good luck.
If you go for T5 or T5WC then you need to know what the ratios are in the transmission.
"Normally" v8 cars has a good ration for some one like me, with 3.70 rear.
I want a low 5th gear (0.63) and I need manuel out to speedo, and the stronger WC transmission, so a 1352-176 transmission was the transmission for me.
As I see it, then you don't need manuel out to speedo, so you can look for transmission from 88 and up.
IMO, the best one is the one that is available to you at the best price and will match your needs.
In my case, a local T56 from a '97 Camaro being sold on Craigslist for $1k was the best one. Hardly use the 6th gear, but its there....and someday I can re-gear the rear end to make better use of it.
Some will say that the SST bolt-in kits and transmissions are the best because they want a bolt-in solution and will spend the cash for it. In my case, dropping $4k on a car worth $10k at best was not an option. My needs were not a bolt-in kit.

best 5speed imo, T5 from G-Force, shifts like butter behind my 408w at 7k and has no trouble at all with the power and easy to source parts if something happens
I did the TKO from SST. Great experience overall. I guess it was a little pricey but it's a transmission, plus you get everything you need and it's well put together. New drive shaft, new cross member, all the hardware and of course the tranny. Awesome trans. I got the .82 fifth gear and it's perfect. I have 3.54 rear gears. They were very nice to work with all around. I have a thread on my install somewhere in here...
I just received my TKO-600 road race kit from SST that will sit behind a 496.
I researched several kits and they were actually cheaper in price than a couple of others.
The SST kit includes everything you need in their kit.
Most of the others I found were a "Base kit" and then you had to add everything else making the other kits actually more expensive.
No guess work with the SST kit and everything is there.
Their sales techs are very knowledgeable and will help you pick the trans best for you and your use of your car.
I did the SST kit conversion, seems pricey at first, but the support and absolute completeness of the kit down to the smallest clip make it a bargain, no surprises, no hunting down a spring or rod or bushing. It's all there in the kit.
