I purchased a steering coupler web repair kit. Does anyone know how you get the old web off the coupler. It looks to me to be pressed on. This is off a 1970 Corvette with power steering.
The bolts won't come apart. Like I said it seems like they are not bolts and look like studs pressed in to each other. Maybe I need to grind the studs off to get it apart. Not sure what to do to get them apart.
Yes the original type was held together with a pressed type rivet set_up(swaged ? ), the replacement "kits" usually have a bolt and lock nut type set up , usually just nylock nuts.
You can grind the pins flat where they are peened over and then punch them out. The rebuild kit I used had pins that had to be pressed into place and then peened over.
Thats one of the jobs the rounded end of a ball peen hammer is used for.
They also offer a 'complete' coupler pretty cheap that can simply be bolted in rather than 'rebuilding' the original. As I recall those 2 studs are pretty well pressed in there. The new ones have a rubber joint with a metal mesh for electrical conductivity which actually seems to work pretty well. The old ones like yours has a thin copper shunt that connects across the studs - mine never provided great continuity for me.
