If the VIN check software you're using requires the longer VINs, then the early cars will not be there. You could try a title search with the state DMV where the car was last titled.

thanks for the information, just don’t want to buy something and when I go to get the title transferred to my name that the car has a salvage title that has been washed at some point in a different state ..
many ( most/all?) states talk to a national database for stolen/salvaged/odometer discrepancy titles. but many states were not on board until recently. titles washed may show up depending on how long ago.
therefor you may or may not uncover a checkered past for your car, depending on how long ago. call your DMV and ask them, they can do a history check but remember that their info is only as good as the database they query.
also try nmvtis ( google it). you can run a report yourself for a small fee. I would do it for any car I was thinking of buying.

thanks for the information.. a friend bought a car and the title was clean , when he went to have the car titled in his name it showed that the car was issued a salvage title back in the 80s , he wasn’t able to get it titles in the state that he lived in. Luckily was able to get his money back. I don’t want to go through the same thing.

if the title was clean then it was inspected and deemed safe for public roads, however the title will always have a reference to it being salvaged vehicle. ive dealt with a dozen or so salvage titles and depending on which state they are being registered in this inspection can be a few hundred or a thousand dollars, some states require the frame to be measured and certified by a body shop, others simply require a state inspector test drive / examine it. to the best of my knowledge there is no state that cannot certify a salvage title and license it as long as it is inspected which itself is a bit of a pita as most states have a list of inspectors who work independent and will charge a arm and leg if they have to travel to where the car is.
Never rule out the C3registry............After I bought my 72'........I found a bunch of pics of the car and info from ten years prior. This won't tell you title status but can give you insight..........
