Hi all,
I am working on my 81 which had a bad engine fire. I purchased a AC blower box along with a heater box from a 79, which I thought would fit fine. Looking at the pic though you can see where the old strip caulk line is above the firewall and there is an opening exposed also. I am thinking I may be missing a small piece that covers the exposed area, or else a 79 doesn't interchange with an 81. The AIM is no help and the pictures I have don't show enough detail. Can anyone help shed some light on the problem?
Thanks.....Terre

I found a couple of exploded view drawings and neither one shows anything covering the back opening. So this may be the correct way, just seems odd they had strip caulk all the way to the top part that is above the firewall. I will keep looking just to make sure before I proceed with the installation.
maybe its just me , but I cant work out what part you have from that angle !
Nope, probably not just you. It's a pretty tight shot so it's hard to pinpoint what we are looking at. Here are a couple of pics where I have backed off with the camera. This should help to see exactly what we are looking at.
Same angle just backed off about 2 feet. Passenger side looking towards the front of car.
This one is from the front looking back. The A/C evaporator box sticks above the top of the firewall which according to my pics is normal. But I can't clearly see the backside to see if the opening is normal.
Here is my original pic before tear down. Not a great pic and not a good angle to see any details.
I had a quick look through this thread and there's a few that look similar to what you have.
sorry not much help , I threw all that stuff away years ago and went vintage air.
No problem, thanks for the effort. I think we are good to go. I did a search on Ebay and all of the boxes listed show 74-82 as the same. So the box is fine, the firewall and mounting points are fine, so I am going with there isn't any issues here and I can go ahead and proceed. Thanks for everyone's help!

I'll look at the installed housing this morning to see how it looks.
I haven't looked at it in a long time.
Maybe grab a photo too.
81blackvette - that's just what I was looking for, great pics. Thanks for taking the time to post them. Looks like I am good, just need to put some of the caulk on the back side where the box meets the firewall. Thanks again!
