Default Winter project help

Hey guys,

Going to attempt to rebuild my transmission - 4 speed 1980 manual.

Wanted to know what rebuild kit to buy. I see several on all the sites and am not sure which to get. Also want to know is if there are any "since the transmission is out, do this" suggestions.

With all the sales going on this time of year I want to take advantage of them.
Links are always helpful. If we have forum vendors that have what I need, by all means, post them.

Thanks.

PS. - If someone has a how to or video break down, please share. (no i have not searched google yet, just asking as it came to me while writing this out).

no no no, small projects every winter. I don't want this to turn into me not driving the car for 3-4 years. Maybe one day in the future when i have a shop of my own and not taking up a space in the garage.

I tried to check it out but the domain doesn't exist. Are you sure you didn't leave out a letter or something?

Thanks for the link, I was able to get to it now. If I am not mistaken, the 1980 manual is a TH350 right? I didn't see anything for that in the rebuild kits or transmissions section. Does it go by another name?

From Google:
The TH350 transmission was introduced in the 1969 model year as the successor to the GM Powerglide automatic transmission. Jointly developed by Chevy and Buick, it is also referred to as the CBC (Chevrolet-Buick Combined) 350. The Turbo 350 quickly become known for its strength, versatility and compactness.

The TH350 is an automatic. Your 4 speed is a Borg Warner.

Since its out...... rebuild your shifter, check your clutch, replace the throw out bearing at a minimum, replace the trans mount, Use permatex ultra black to seal all the gaskets and covers in the tranny. Drill and put in a ddrain plug if it doesnt have one using a magnetic plug and remove the glued in magnet if your tranny has them. The muncies did andthey can tear up a tranny. Mine almost fell out when I went to remove it. Use some on the cluster pin as well so it doesnt weep past it. https://www.permatex.com/products/ga...asket-maker-4/

If you have a welder, cut the trans crossmember, weld in some flanges and make it removable so its easier to get the tranny in and out without removing the motor.

Since you asked,......if you're pulling the motor to get the tranny out, which is the easiest way, you can clean and paint the motor and manifolds, clean and paint the engine compartment, replace the manifold to downpipe gaskets, clean and paint the power steering components. I forgot to add, since the driveshaft is out , you could replace the u joints in that.

Now if you wanted to get into the "while youre in there or while the engines out list", you could replace the pan gasket if its leaking, replace the valve cover gaskets for the same reason, paint the tranny and bell housing, check out your hoses and replace anything that is dry rotted or cracked.

Hey Jeff,

Unless I am missing something, the site doesn't have a rebuild kit for a borg warner. I did a search and all i found was 3 spare parts i can buy.

Let's step back, for a moment. WHY are you wanting to rebuild the transmission? Unless they're abused, most 4 speed manual transmissions are pretty reliable. The bearing on the input shaft of the transmission, located on the nose of the tranny, can get a little "whiney". I had that happen to a 4 speed that I used to have, so I pulled the transmission to address that. But beyond that, unless your transmission is making strange noises, the only other thing that you might need to address would be oil leakage/seepage. There are seals and a gasket, for the side cover, and a seal, for the output shaft/yoke. Other than that, there isn't much to go after....

Couple of reasons....
- To learn and because I want to
- its hard for it to go into gear sometimes, it have to play with it
- Its hard to get the car into reverse without it sounding like it grinds the gears (this is more of a clutch or linkage problem, but I figure do it all at once)
- I have no record as to when the last tranny fluid change was done (which probably means too long - have never done since I bought it 2011 and the previous owner said they never did)
- the car is almost 40 years old and I have someone near by who has done it before and can help (this is a rare thing)
