Default Checking the birdcage?

Looked at a '76 today. I noticed that the stainless trim around the T-top area is held in mostly by screws but the back holes have rivets. Going under the assumption that's how it was from the factory...? How do you normally check under the trim? Will it bend up far enough to get a good look without creasing the metal?

From my limited experience, the problem areas are not normally under large stainless steel trim. On my car I could just see a little bit of corrosion when I took off the stainless trim around the windshield, I could see more after I removed the dash panel and I could only see all of it once I removed the windshield itself. None of these are really practical when looking at someone else's car unfortunately. I'd say your best bet is to ask for the kick panels to be removed and see if there are any loose bits of rust inside. If so, there is probably some degree of rust up above.
