[C3 road trip stories] How confident would you be driving this '79 L82 450 miles?

Loved the video. My gut feeling, check the fluids and that car will easily do it. It's got that instinctive 'vibe' of being a good little girl. I saw that in, mine in a Craigslist ad and I knew, that she'd be a rowdy ride. She didnt' disappoint and in all likelyhood, yours won't either. Watching the guy drive it, he was soft pedalling that thing. You could smell it, you could tell, that little bitch, was begging for more. That's how mine is, I'll tell you this, there's nothing, no, nothing, like driving a 60's-70's factory four speed car. Do they have a hydraulic clutch? Hell No! They got a Z-Bar linkage that the ball of your left foot is directly connected to the pressure plate of the clutch. You're not judging the 'feel' of how the car is moving. You/re feeling the clutch, grab the friggin' flywheel It is a direct mechanical connection. Nothing like it. And is it some little girl shifter like in a modern car? Nuh-huh. You put your whole arm into the shift, like a MAN! Every shift means something. And no computer telling how to start up the engine. Nope. Pump the pedal three times, hold the carb blades open a crack and crank it. Just as a side note, be prepared to love it, work on it, deal with it, because you've got to dedicated to have one of these, count on it. Welcome!

The C3's are almost bullet proof. They run and run.
As long as you know the basics I would get in and drive it. I would put a bottle of ZED in the oil.. just me for added protection.
Just check the tire dates - over 10 years is an issue..
I put 3k miles on my 71 last year - no hassles.
Best fun ever... congrats on the new baby...

I just came to this thread, so I'm also assuming the car has arrived with you?
For what it's worth, I'd have gone for the road trip! That video was wonderful, as you say, it made you feel almost as if you were there in the car. (The dealer needs to learn to actually double de-clutch though!) All the things mentioned above apply to when you first drive it I guess, check all the fluids, the tyres, brakes etc. Stop after an hour or so to check it all over again, look for any leaks etc.
The nature of our club activities over here in France means that we often travle long distances to club weekends and, in reality, I don't worry unduly about our old '78. I'm not sure we have done 450 miles in one day, just because we tend to stop at points of interest etc, so time runs out! But we've certainly done 350+, making sure we knew where we'd stop for fuel!
It looks a very nice car, and should give miles of pleasure!

She just arrived this morning!
And I fit! Don't think I've mentioned it but I'm 6'5". Overall for a 40 year old "survivor" it's in good shape and drives well. More later.

Damn, as a 79 L-82 4 speed owner myself, I was gonna say, buy me a one way plane ticket and shoot me some gas money and I'll personally deliver it! That car is CLEAN!! I've gone and done exactly what I suggested above for a buddy of mine and it was a trip I'll never forget. He bought the car online, 600 miles away and was trying to decide how to get it home. I'd do it again tomorrow. Now, we need more pics, and I'd be interested in hearing if you found the car to be pretty much exactly as they described and as you expected. Did I mention I'm jealous???

Well, you look suitable pleased!
I'm 6'1 and never think our '78 feels at all cramped, even after a long day in it. I think you'll love the car!

Looks nice! You should have endless fun with it.
My wife and I took turns driving her new 79 back over 250 miles, at night, through a thunderstorm, with dim headlights. We won't ever forget that adventure. Go drive it, and post photos and tales of your travels!

Looks great doug...more and more those late C3s are growing on me. Tall also how bad was the legroom situation? Remember the 73 was a pretty tight fit unless you got a smaller steering wheel.
Sat in a members 78??Awhile back with an aftermarket wheel and found its actually doable, comfort level picked up big time. There will be another one in my future

I haven't left my Feedback, may have mentioned it but seller has 100% eBay feedback with nearly 400 transactions, so I'm sure he'll make it right with the items he did not disclose.
The color is very intriguing, almost like a chameleon and changes with the lighting, even had a yard worker in my mom's retirement community ask me what color it was. It's a blast to drive, windows down and straight pipes out the sides!

Credit Card and AAA card and go! 450 miles is not all that far........stop off every hour or two to inspect underneath for leaks and underhood for any weirdness.
Looks like a pretty nice car......is it an Auto? If so......check and smell the trans fluid before you take off.....that would be the only thing that you cannot really tell from driving around the block before you go........
Have fun and tll us how it went

Car looks good. Just take your time and make sure that one of the important fluids don’t drain out while you aren’t looking. C4s leaked, but NTHING compared to a C3

Glad you got the car Doug. I know it was a long, agonizing process especially with the fools in OT piling on. I have to ask, and be honest, are the doors as messed up as I thought they were or was it poor pictures. Also, the right rocker....what's going on with that?
When you say you hope the seller makes it right, what exactly are you expecting? The car REALLY does look good at your place. I sure hope it all works out and you get enjoy that car.
