c3 shifter hard to get in reverse

73 four speed car, hard to get into reverse
Stock shifter
Is this a common problem?

are you aware that you have to put it in a forward gear before going into reverse, check your owners manual if you have one.

True, because that syncro's the reverse, before you attempt to go over to it. If that doesn't work, then you'll have to adjust the linkages. The stock shifters aren't exactly precise.

I finally found the issue, actually interference with the console. I bought the car without a console in it. Once I installed the console, I started noting the problem.
A "slight adjustment" and it's backing up just fine
