Are these really effective? These have been missing from my 71 for decades. Since I have the engine out it would be easy to add them. But, is there any real benefit?

They do work.......but they are just terrible from a service standpoint.........and with today's resistor wires, completely unnecessary.
If you are worried about heat......proper routing is key for you to have no issues......bad tuning will cook wires and boots as well.
I route over the valve covers and down........even if I had a bone stock LT-1 I would.......the stock setup is plain miserable.
The RF shielding, is what you are referring to. These can work depending on your wires. If you see pictures of many engine bays on this forum, you will see that they a lot are not using the RF shielding. My 72 has all the original shielding and I do not get any static. My 74 had no shielding and had no static. The shielding is one pain to install, and if you are not looking originality, there is probably little benefit. The 1970 and earlier had shields on the front plugs, and were eliminated in 71. So not and exact science.
