V gate shifters
Has anyone here used a Hurst or Mr Gasket V gate shifter in there vette? I was wondering if it would fit in the hole already in the console without any modifications. The videos I have found look like it may have a lot more throw than a regular Hurst 4 speed shift but it should be limited by the transmission its mounted to.
Mr Gasket V gate
I think this is a Ram Rod V gate

It wasn't a 'Vette, but my little bro had one in a built '70 Mach 1, back in the early '80's. It was great, as long as you were slamming gears, 1,2,3,4. But downshifting was a PITA! You had to pull up on the T-rings to drop down each and every gear. They may have changed the design, but I think it would still be, straight forward, straight back, forward again and then straight back for 4th. Correct me, if I'm wrong.

You are correct, pull the lever to keep the gate in the top slider for first to second, then release the pull lever and when you go to third it drops down in the lower gate for 3rd and 4rth. I think it looks really cool. You just have to pull the lever for first and second
just a thought. I had a Hurst Super Shifter III in my 71 camaro. It has a lever on the side that you lift up to block reverse. It is still an H-pattern shift but with a short shift stick it had a shorter pattern. I used to abuse that Muncie with full throttle shifts behind a 427 BB, very reliable shifter.
try one of the many circle track supply houses ...jr mtrspts, coleman, cv products
-edit- jr sold to karlperformance.com also see longacre and daymotorsports
I had one in my 74. You will have to cut the tunnel because the shifter itself is much larger then a stock type.
You can slam it as hard as you want though

Do you recall if you have to modify the metal center console. I've been looking at used ones just in case
If memory serves me correctly I had a guy cut me a blank center cover and I cut it out for the shifter myself out of 1/8” aluminum plate but it was 25 years ago. You need an elongated slot for the main shifter to move and a side one for the rev lockout. Try the stock one n see.I might be able to contact the guy I sold it to n ask if he still has it. Eventually the car was cut in half and is currently a trike v8 project

Thank you, that would be cool. No rush right now. I'm hoping the shifter shows up this weekend but the engine tranny are out for winter projects anyways

I had a Hurst Ram 4 shfter(looks to be the same shifter) in my 1965 Mustang with a 351 Cleveland HO and top loader 4 speed. The box said "drag racing only" on it but I drove the Mustang daily in good weather. Because of the newer transmission, I had to have the linkage modified but I loved driving the car with the shifter. I also had to modify the transmission hump because it was larger than a normal shifter.Yes, you had to downshift by lifting levers and downshifting at the same time but once you got the hang of it..... it wasn't too bad. The Mustang had a one piece fiberglass front end on it.
The shift rods are pretty easy to fab. A few ways to do it.
1. Buy tubing with enough wall thickness so you can drill and tap it for the rod ends. Tough part is if you don't have lathe drilling and tapping straight isn't easy.
2. Buy thinner wall tubing and just weld fine thread nut on the end.
3. Buy the threaded inserts that go inside the tube and are welded in place.

Update.
I go the shifter and rebuilt it buying a few new parts and replacing the Mr Gasket lever with a new hurst one. It came out nice and is reasonbly tight. I just have to add a new bronze shim inot the reverse path to take out that side to side slop.
how she arrived with ratty rods from God knows what application
bolting it to the Muncie. I came with the correct mount for the Muncie for a Corvette
after replacing the Mr Gasket shift lever with the correct Hurst lever. After this pic was taken, I added a spacer to lengthen the 1-2 lock out finger lever and received and insstalled the stand off guide for the same lever
I was able to find the factory manuals that listd all the correct rods for a corvette, but founmd bad news. The rods dont exist anymore.
I located some rods that were close to the factory designed rods and had to rethread them longer and modify the bends. No one carries these old rods new anymore.
