Default Side Pipe Question

I am considering buying all the components from Paragon to install the '69 style side pipes on my '72 350 4 speed convertible. The engine is not stock. It is now a 383 stroker. Rather than try to explain what was done to the motor before I bought the car, below is everything that was done to the original motor when it was rebuilt in 2012. Rear gear is 3.36.

The sheet below does not show that the motor has an Edelbrock performer intake. The exhaust manifolds are stock, Carburetor is original Quadrajet that was "reworked".

Right now, the car is loud and lopes like a Nascar stocker, which I love. Having said that, my wife and I can go for a ride with the top down and talk to one another, without yelling, when cruising.

I can't tell you what kind of mufflers are on the car now. All I can say is that they are not stock.

My question is, if I put these side pipes on my car, will my wife and I still be able talk to one another without yelling when cruising?

Not concerned with being able to talk to her while going through the gears.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

Is your car dynamat or have sound deadening material installed? Also with side pipe exhaust you can get baffles for them to help with the noise. I think it depends on a couple of things.

The interior of the car is completely gutted now. Dynamat or a Dynamat comparable product will be installed.

I have 72 4 speed convertible with a stock 350. I put 69 factory pipes and covers on it. They are not too loud as at in my opinion. I have dynamat in the interior.

Thanks
Joey

Joey,

Beautiful car! I appreciate your input.

Did you get your pipes and covers from Paragon?

The pipes are a set of NOS set from a guy who bought them new over the counter and never installed them. The covers are from Paragon. They are perfect. I have bought extra covers parts rom eBay etc. Covers show up every once in a while.

I have Paragon covers/Allen’s Exhaust sidepipes on my ‘69. I drive the car all over, always with the top down. The car has a hummm at cruising highway speed but my wife and I don’t have problems talking, nor do I have trouble hearing the stereo.

I also have side pipes and ran a 383 stroker with large collecters. She would set off car alarms at work as I idled by.
Later went to a 350 Ramjet motor with smaller collecters on the headers and it was very nice and easy to drive sound wise.

Now I have a sb 427 with BB Allen exhaust . Noticeably louder but I have no freeway time yet.

I have 2.5 inch Ramshorns and 2.5inch sweet thunder pipes which are louder than the stock 2 inch side exhaust I once had. I can still hae a conversation and enjoy music with the top down. My friend says he can hear me coming a couple blocks away but it isnt that loud in the car

383 Stroker, Doug's side pipes and headers, STS baffles... we have to yell to hear each other.

But it's awesome.

My car is a 72 4-speed small block convertible also. Just had a brand new set of Paragon's installed a few months ago. Yes, I can here the radio, and talk with my wife. But in all honesty, I wish mine were one notch quieter...

Ricks Corvettes and other venders have side pipes with different "loudness" . I have been thinking of replacing my 67 side pipes with "quiet" pipes . I have not heard them or seen them on a car locally.

I want to do my 71 but until I hear the Medium or quiet pipes I'm waiting …

I find the 67 ok for local driving, but after an hour it's a bit much. Especially with a 3:55 rear and concrete barrier on the highway.

I don’t have the 69 style pipes, I have Hooker long tube and they are not loud until floored.
One thing for sure, I noticed a significant reduction in noise after I insulated the doors.

A friend of mine has the Paragon "quiet" side exhaust on his factory BB 66.. It's the PERFECT sound in my book. When I was on the phone with Paragon to order my exhaust for my 72. I asked if I could order a set of "quiet" in the 69 style? I was told NO such thing at this time.

I'm not new to side exhaust. I wore out a factory pair that were on my car for almost 35 years. I figured the new ones would be much quieter then my old rotted out ones.. They are,a bit, but not as much as I would have thought. As you said, local driving is fine and fun.

The way my new ones sound now. It would defiantly make a long distance drive like the RT 66 trip we have in the planning stage a bit less enjoyable I'm thinking...…?.

I have a set of "Quiet" pipes installed from EC Products.

Still loud. I plan to install a balance tube next. However I have the door panels off so maybe when they are installed, that will help as well .

Just an observation about side pipes....a member of our Corvette group had a 1969 BB with side pipes. No one wanted to park next to him because when he started it, it blew dust and dirt all over the adjacent cars.
