This was stated in the letter I got. My point was that this is the first time ever I've gotten a letter such as this, and I've been ordering from Summit for decades. I am not trying to get out of paying the tax, but just am questioning why now.
And,.....what about all the other places I order stuff from? Are they going to send me letters too? Never got any before
This is because Congress Changed the law. Now it is legal for states to charge tax on online and phone sales. It has been a huge issue and it is costing companies a ton of money to deal with. It was supposed to be simple but it is anything but. For example depending on where you live, you may have to pay state tax, city tax, county tax, restaurant tax, food tax etc. It is based on where you live and your local taxes, not where the store is located.
The next target of the states and the fed will be electric cars. They currently pay no road taxes on the electricity they use but still drive on the same roads as you and me with our fossil fuel monsters . Will be interesting to see how they handle it. I figure mileage will be the main point of tax calculation. ------ Ken

Summit has a list somewhere on their web site showing which states are taxable through internet sales. (Not sure if you use snailmail if you are taxed) likely thou.
This all started when big brother figured out that internet sales is a trillion dollar industry, tax free. So big brother says, " I want a piece of that pie".
No too many years ago when you filed for taxes the Govt wanted $20 a yr if you purchased items on The Net regardless of amount. Donny needs more than $20 now.
the states were behind that not big brother , it's state sales tax not federal
Well, all those free college educations need to be paid for and don’t forget the homeless need housing, food and medical care.
We should all be thankful to work hard, pay all our taxes, so we can provide for all those who “choose” not to.

I am California, and everyone from EBay to Amazon is now charging me tax. Not happy, as might be driving to Arizona more often now, but if I was taxed, shouldn’t have to pay anything.
I just got a thing from paypal, and haven’t opened it yet. I bet same crap!
Amazon charges me tax on checkout. MA will probably be getting into this too. They love taxes here. Another reason to move to NH, sales tax free states
Another reason why this state rocks. Also if I buy a new car or furniture..etc in Mass and it gets delivered to the house don't have to pay sales tax.

Whatever the price is online or at a local retail store is the price you pay.Only sales tax is on prepared foods such as from a restaurant,Dunkins...etc.
Of course our property taxes are quite higher but its worth it to keep the rif-raf out of this state.
