A couple of years ago, I was able to retrieve the build sheet from my gas tank. I replaced the gas tank and half of the build sheet came off. The other half is stuck to the metal on the tank. I had the piece of gas talk cut and the other half is now just stuck to a small piece of the sheet metal from the old tank. Both the piece that was removed and the pieces stuck to the sheet metal are very fragile and when I try to touch them they just crumble. I am wondering of anyone knows how I can preserve this document, or should I just take photos of what is left of the build sheets, print it, and call it good.
There are various ways of saving crumbling paper. One that I did to save a old clock label is to thin out Elmers glue and slowly "paint" it on the paper to saturate and reinforce it once it dries. You may need to add a backing of some other acid free paper. Was there anything written on the back of these tanks sheets?
Now I am not saying this is what you should do but you can search the internet for various ways of salvaging old paper and decide for yourself!!!

RARE BOOK CONSERVATORS...
This is where to start, they will rehydrate the paper, neutralize it and then mount it.
