Paint color harmonic balancer, and position
I will paint the harmonic balancer with POR15 engine enamel (with a brush, engine is still in car).
- What is the correct color for the balancer? Black or orange?
- What color do you guys paint the 'signal stripe' on the balancer, and the timing 'arrow' (don't know the name) that points to the balancer?
I think got another issue... yesterday when I was removing my crank pulley, I had a hard time getting it off... The pulley and balancer were attached to eachtoher with a centre bolt + spacer.
I turned and turned to get the centre bolt loose. I finally got it loose by using a pulley belt around the crank pulley to hold it in place.
-Now my second question is: Is it a problem that the harminic balancer turned a few times? Do I have to get the 'timing stripe' back to the '0' mark on the arrow? Or can I just put everything back together and leave the position of balancer as it is, when starting the engine?
(Sorry if this is a stupid question, but I'm still learning so...) I just don't want to brake anything when starting my engine.

Before I had the pulley belt to hold down the pulley from turning, I turned the engine I think... I heard a Pffff sound everytime I turned it around....
Did I brake something?
Can l just paint the balancer, and turn the engine on without worrying about the place where the timing mark was (when turning the engine by hand)?
Your timing mark can be repainted white with a fine artist brush.
Your pulley can be spray painted engine satin black.
After it starts, shut it off, attach your crank pulley, torque the bolts, reinstall the belts, tighten belts and drive!
I'll try to figure out what you mean... Sorry I'm just not an expert like you guys. Do you mean that the timing mark has to be 10 or 2 o'clock (just a guess of what I think you mean)?
What would happen if I just put everything together and drive it, with the position of the harmonic balacer not changed back to the original position?

One of posters on here thinks the outer ring of the balancer moved separately from the inner hub just because you unbolted the unit. What you meant to say is, you squeezed the fan belt to hold the balancer while you removed the bolt. Good for you. That's a good trick that works 99% of the time. No strap wrench was ever used and I highly doubt anything is wrong with the balancer. Like I said Post # 7. Finish your paint job, put on the belts and drive it.
Your timing will STILL be right on the money, because you never touched the distributor. The key and keyway at the end of the crankshaft will determine if you installed it correctly. Don't worry about the timing mark. All you are doing is removing the balancer, painting it and reinstalling.
