Two things...I have had the stock unit in my 69' and now have a Hurst in my 72'....there is no comparison. The stock units throws are so long that it feels like engaging gears at a saw mill. I believe it was adjustable (C2's were) , but after I shortened the throw in my C2, the 2-3 shift rods would get bound up and leave you stuck in third gear....this would happen at a 2-3 powershift. The Hurst has positive stops......and clicks through like butter.
The other thing is that the Hurst bolts only to the side of the transmission. The stock unit has a bracket that bolts to the trans and the crossmember.....this bracket is in the way of everything when you go to remove the trans.....makes a straightforward job miserable to me.......
Even if I had my 69' 427/400 still.....it would get a Hurst......

The muncie transmissions themselves have the detente that you feel, not the shifter. The stock Corvette shifter will have shorter shifts if you use the holes closer to the lever nut. If you measure the distance the hole is closer than the muncie. If the shifter is adjusted properly in nuetral with the tool, then it shifts just as nice as the Hurst. I took my Hurst out to try out the stock shifter after I rebuilt it which I like much better. Getting into reverse with the Hurst wasn't my cup of tea.
I would take your stock shifter apart, clean it really well then try it with a thin coat of white grease and make sure its adjusted.
I'm not sure what you mean by tight. Is it hard finding a gear or just feels like a gummed up rod or lever?. If its something other than that it would be in the tranny.

Yes...both shifters shift nice because like you say the detent is in the trans but my hand is heavy on power shifts and the stock unit has no stops.....
