82 vette valuation question
There is a person in my area trying to sell a 1982 Vette for $16,000. The biggest issue is the replacement Jasper engine this fellow had installed about 2 years ago. My feeling is the non numbers matching engine should affect the price much more than he feels.
It has some other issues also so not buying it at his price.
The real question is how much valuation is lost when a non numbers matching engine is installed?
A Driver grade 82 with no more than 50K miles shows as $9,000 in the Corvette DNA app. I would say the replacement engine would lower the value, regardless of condition or mileage, by 10% on an 82.
somewhere around 25%
less on younger base engines
more on highly desirable big blocks and solid lifter engines
look at ebay sold listings, the good original ones are going for 15K or so

Thanks to both of you. Reinforces my thoughts on pricing. Much appreciated.
Sellers can ask whatever it is they want for a "used" item. It is worth no more than what the next party is willing to pay for it.
There are several other factors at play in all this of course: desirability and condition being two important ones.
However, the interest in the item is usually greatly affected by the listing price. List too high for the market and no requests are made, list too low and the phone is non stop....
