Memorial Day was originally called Decoration Day and it originated in the years following the Civil War. The usage of Memorial Day goes back to the 1880's though it didn't become a federal holiday until 1971. The original purpose was to remember those who gave their life in the defense of this country though in later years it honors all those that served and are deceased. Veterans Day on the other hand honors all those who are serving and those that did serve. I have an uncle who was killed on Saipan, another uncle who served on the USS Iowa and a father in law who served on New Guinea, all deceased. I served in the Marine Corps fro 61 to 66 and the Marine Corps Reserve fro 73 to 80. My oldest daughter is an Army nurse stationed at Fort Bragg. My youngest daughter was a Navy Corpsman from 93 to 00.I have a grandson in the Marine Corps presently in the Persian Gulf and another grandson in the Army stationed at Fort Stewart.
A salute to you Doorgunner. For your service to our great country!!! And to all the veterans on the forum and especially to those who gave the ultimate sacrifice. A debt we can never repay. Ike

My great uncle was buried in France during WWII. My father hit the beaches D-day plus two and then all the way across France as .30 machine gunner. I traveled a lot for business in the UK and Europe in the 1990's. At the 50th anniversary of the end of the war I asked my dad if he wanted to travel back to France and visit the grave sites. He said absolutely no. He said he has too many bad memories of the friends he lost . He never talked about his time in the army.
I was in the army from 1976-1979. A bit different time because of all the ******** that thought anyone in the army were less than eduducated. We were told to travel in civilian clothes so we wouldn't be harassed by the liberal scum.
During my travels thru Atlanta from the late 1990's thru my retirement in 2017 I bought many meals for the troopers traveling thru the airport. The company I worked for was for it 100 percent.
No limit on what I spent.
God bless America.

I was in 1980-1984 - first of the Regan years and a different story with civilian attitude. Sorry you got dissed - that was downright disrespectful. I had 2 uncles in WW2 and a father who served during the Korean affair. They don't call
them the greatest generation for nothing...
