It's been determined that I need a new alternator for my '81 with a 350, power windows, power locks, power drivers seat, A/C and rear window defroster. The current alternator was replaced four years ago by a previous owner. The part number on the receipt from the garage that did the work says that it's a Delco Remy. The stamping's on the alternator say either 1102391 or 1102394 and end with ?7A. My research indicates that the car needs a 70 amp 15SI alternator many due to the rear defroster but when I looked up the numbers 1102391 and 1102394, they're both 10SI 37 amp alternators which answers the ?7A question.
My questions are 1) with the current alternator being only 37 amps, is that what shortened its life and 2) are there any recommends on a replacement alternator?
81's with a rear defogger (which was about 90% of them), came with a 70 amp alternator, part number 1101075. Cars without the rear defogger got a 63 amp alternator, part number 1103103.
I would imagine that being only 37 amp, could have something to do with it's shortened life span, but it could also just be a rebuilt that went bad. 1981 spec remanufactured 70 amp alternators are still available from AC Delco, under part number 321-137.
