No Idea what that bracket is for.
It looks like the unit has the necessary mounts already there.
Are you missing the bracket that connects the rear of the unit to the manifold bolt?
Do yourself a favor and get the AIM for your year. I am constantly looking at mine to see what goes where.

Been a long time since I removed mine permanently. But I think, or guess that because of the extreme weight of that A/C compressor that the "steel" bracket attached to the rear of the compressor and the other end went to one of the threaded holes at the end of the cyl head. IDK

72 used the same mounts as my 75 as shown in Bills72n84 post above and it's pleny solid with the tail end mounted to the manifold bolts.
