I'm just about to replace the carpets in my 1979, I bought the Auto Custom Carpet kit from CA some years back .. like all projects it has taken a bit longer than expected but i'm now ready for new carpet.
I'm interested in the experience/fit that others have had and any advice on how to achieve the best result.
I bought the same carpet for my 79'. Fit well. You'll need to trim some around the 3 compartment doors but that's about it. Take your time and do a little trimming at a time. You'll also need to cut holes for the seat and seatbelt bolts.
did you re-use the original insulation (eg over the wheel wells) and glue the carpet down over the floor and wheel wells? I have put dynamat throughout the car and I'm worried that the combination may be too thick
From: PHOENIX, AZ Yes, it's true. You are a good woman. Then again, you may be the Antichrist.

Here's a tip, when it was time to put holes in the carpet for bolts etc., I used an old school pointy electric soldering iron. It makes perfect holes with no frayed edges.

No I didn't, it was shot and coming apart. I just used the Dynamat.

The ACC carpet kits come with the insulation and pad to install. Even with the Dynamat you are still a long way from too thick. Should be nice and quiet in the cockpit.
a couple of threads refer to using heat to improve the fit .. did you guys do this? if so, did you use a hair dryer or heat gun? I'm worried about damaging the carpet with the heat gun.
If you put the rear carpet that goes over the humps in the car and let them get warm, the install will go a lot easier. One member left them in his all day and installed them when he came home. I used a number of sharp picks to located the holes for the seats and seat belts/shoulder harness bolts, before using the pointed soldering iron to make holes. Trim slowly and make small cuts. On my 73, I covered the seat belt retractor plastic covers with carpet, and cut a small slit for the belt to come through. This way you will not see the black plastic. Also you need three rubber plugs for the rear horizontal carpet if your car is a convertible. Good Luck
