Vehicle Registration Renewal Fee?
Just got my first vehicle registration renewal notice here in California for my 1968 model Corvette and it is for a whopping $344.00! I understand that $40 of it is for my special vanity plate but that still leaves a $304.00 fee.
Curious what some of you are currently paying in other states?
Thanks,
Redvette2
Edit: Anybody from Florida?...thinking of moving there.

Wow, you guys are getting hosed! My PA antique registration and vintage plate are lifetime for my 68. I think it was less than a hundred and fifty bucks when all was said and done.

Here in Michigan we pay the plate fee rated on the value of the car when new. (so back in '77) I just paid $32 today for another yr. The downside of this method is if you bought a $80,000 new car, and you paid $300 for a plate, you pay that every year, forever. 5 yrs from now, 15 yrs from now, even if its rusted out with a odometer falling out of the dash, worthless piece of crap.
We also have 5 yr. Historic Plates dirt cheap. But they have restrictions. If a cops thinks you are not using your special plate accordingly, they have the right to question the driver. So I just buy the standard plate $32 no restrictions, can go anywhere, anytime.

I'm also in so cal, and I only pay $125 for my '72. Look at your invoice and see the breakdown. The fee doesn't seem to have any relevance to the value of the vehicle. I pay more in yearly registration for my '82 Honda MIni Trail 70 than for my '55 Chevy. Makes no sense. My 2016 Honda was $255.

Chesterfield, Virginia (just outside of Richmond) here.
So, Annual VA tags are @$40/yr (personalized plates are higher and there's a discount for paying multi-year + on-line)
You can get permanent antique tags for $50 - good forever but you're responsible for vehicle safety and driving is "limited" (nobody I know limits their driving) Similar as described by JJEXP above
There are no annual Chesterfield/local property taxes for vehicles older than 20 years
and
there is no annual Chesterfield/local registration fee for vehicles older than 25 years.
So, @$40/yr for me.

While I do not know what it is for Classic Cars or Historical cars, I certainly do know what it is for "normal" cars.

Yes...my friends in AZ say they just recently raised the rates way up! And I suspect that has happened in CA also. Now that I think about it they make you state the amount you paid for the car. Could be based on value now. Too bad as this car might be driven 3K mile a year and not wearing out the roads too much.

2023 Restomod of the Year finalist
2020 C3 of the Year Winner - Modified
In Georgia -
They use to bill you every year- some made up amount - not even close to what your vehicle was worth-
So if it was 10+ years old- you might pay about $100 on your Birthday...Great Idea- a Birthday tax!!!
Now the state nails you BIG time when you buy the car (or move here!)- and uses NADA to figure what the vehicle is worth. Said my 73 was worth $22K (paid $10K)- and I didn't even tell them it was a L-82 with AC!!!
"In 2016 through 2018, new car owners will pay a vehicle rate of 7% in most Georgia counties. This rate will be reevaluated in 2018 and 2022 to determine if it needs to change, but under the current law, it will never exceed 9% of the vehicle’s fair market value.
So if you like to trade cars every few years- it's ridiculous!!!
When my wife bought her 2016 Mustang it was $3800!!! Then only $25/year- what a bargain!!!
So if she is like the average person and trades cars every three years- that's basically going to cost you over $100/month to register the car...$1200 a YEAR!!
Not to mention the .31 cents a gallon the state currently gets...plus 8.9% sales tax - 6% state income tax...and EACH year 1.2% on the price of my home (several thousand dollars) Just to sit in my house..
OK...I'm going to go check my blood pressure,....

Least we forget about the school tax billed every July. Based on your home’s assessed value it can be a couple thousand for a cheap house (good luck finding one of those), to over $20,000/yr. for a million $ House (depending on area and how good the school district is).
