Is it possible to do a.combustion leak test, on the cooling system, in a 69 big block car? I am looking at a 69 L68 but it seems to have an overheat issue. (I am aware of most of the other possible issues ie: correct radiator, shroud, shroud seals, etc.) What I'm wondering is that can this test be done (effectively) doing it on the expansion tank?
Thanks for the comments and questions. After a little more research, I've found that "yes" it can be done, just like on a "recovery" system. I've never had any experience with a pressurized system like this and wasn't sure how all of the hoses were routed, allowing access to do it. Thanks again for the help.
You're saying you something like an emission sniffer over the open radiator cap to see if you see any combustion gasses? I have seen people do this.
The kits typically have a chemical and a clear suction bulb. When the antifreeze is sucked into the bulb containing the chemical it changes to a certain color if combustion byproducts are present.
Actually...the vapors are sucked up into a tube, through a chemically reactive liquid, that will change colors, if exhaust gases (co2) are present. They have other analyzers but this is the most cost effective method without the expense of a much higher dollar machine. They can sometimes be rented from an auto parts store for about $25 and you have to buy a bottle of the reactive liquid. (about 8-10 dollars). Going to check out that 69 today!
