Long story short:
put a ZZ4 motor into a '75, previous owner of motor switched intakes, not sure what it is. hood will not close now, I am pretty sure intake is taller than the intake that came with the motor. From you guys can you tell me if I switch intakes back to what was on there, should there be enough hood clearance? Also planning on using a drop base air cleaner. This is NOT my car, it's a project car we did for one of the girls in the club, it was her fathers.
Forgot to mention that we tried a few different cleaners, triangle one. and the drop base off my car. Hood still hit. That's why I wanted to change intake.
So what you need is the "Carb Pad Height" for that ZZ4 intake. Then compare to stock height. Must be a way to get that information and see how far you are off.
Summit sells a 1 1/2" drop base in chrome for a open style cleaner.

The unit in the above photo appears to have all the plumbing for PCV, etc. The one I got from Summit is plain inside but does have provisions for PCV hardware.
Can you post a picture of your current setup? Perhaps you have a tall single-plane intake, like from a ZZ6 or any number of aftermarket intakes. Here's a table of some common intakes and carb-pad heights, including the ZZ4.
My wife's 79 L48 came with an Edelbrock drop-base air cleaner, with a 2" element (stock is 2.75"). This gave lots of extra room under the hood (and also forced the car to breathe hot air, which is why it was all replaced with a complete L82 intake system, which fit fine on the stock engine). I have a ZZ4 intake waiting to go into that car the next time I have a reason to pull the stock iron intake.
If you are really close, another way to get a half-inch of clearance may be to change to solid metal engine mounts.
Ok, we're going to have to back up. First off, so you all don't think I'm a dumbass. I have not seen this motor in a couple years when she bought it. I did not install into the car .We were told it's a ZZ4 but after looking at pics she sent me I think it's a Vortek. When we worked on it a couple weeks ago I never paid attention to what the intake looked like.
Here is pics of when she bought it: Hopefully on Tuesday I will have pics of these what guys installed. If it is a vortek I hope we can find a shorter intake to fit under the hood. Still be cheaper for her than replacing the hood.
.
Based on the manifold design, it looks like a Vortec (manifold to head bolts are vertical instead of angled like earlier SBC's). Compare the three manifolds below. The GM optional Vortec manifold appears to be very similar to the ZZ4. You might investigate that one and see if it is shorter. Summit refers to it as a low-rise manifold.
I installed a ZZ4 in my 73 with the stock air cleaner without the cowl sealing ring. It clears the hood just fine it will not clear with the cowl sealing ring. That's the ring that sits inside the air cleaner with the foam seal that seals against the hood.
