As with any battery, there is always the risk of an explosion from the gases and a spark.. Especially in tight quarter compartments of a C3. This hazard is pretty much non existent with a sealed battery such as a AGM style.
So the charger companies prefer you make your spark elsewhere.

Don't get a cheap one. A friend and I both had a cheap Harbor Freight burn up a battery.

A related question now - As I'm just about to take delivery of a new battery, should I put that on my usual trickle charger straight away, or wait a fe months - year even, before hooking it up?

If you want to maintain a full charge on your battery, hook it up straight away.
A trickle charger maintains a full charge on your battery, which will add to the battery's life.

Is the battery going to have the acid already in it when you receive it or will it be dry and you have to fill it?

If you have to fill it do not put the acid in until you are ready to use/install the battery. Leave it dry and store it that way until the time you will be
using it.
Then when you are ready to use it fill it with the acid and let it sit for 30 to 60 minutes for it to be absorbed into the plates then you will have to add a little more. Then put it on at small amp trickle charger overnight and you will be good to install it and start using it. I use a small amp "Battery Tender" when I do this.

This method I learned from a battery manufacturer.

They actually sell cars without a working battery? I have never heard of this.

This is about replacement batteries.

Some come dry and you have to purchase the acid or an acid pack is included with the battery.
