Default 68 headlight doors too small

Hello everyone, the quick back story is that I bought a 68 that was completely disassembled.

I’m trying to figure out why the headlight doors are much smaller than the openings. They are also smaller than the edges of the bezels.

Am I correct in assuming that the lids of the doors should at least be flush with the tops of the bezels?

The gap around the head light door is almost 7/16”, which I didn’t bother adjusting because it’s not going to look right with that much space.

Are there different sizes of headlight doors for C3’s?

Any thoughts would be appreciated!

Thanks

In 1968 there were 3 different size head light doors each were about 1/4" larger the the previous. You may have a later build car with an earlier bucket.

Thanks, that explains a lot. Seems like the best remedy is to find doors that are correct for the opening? Larger doors would also cover the bezels.

Or an early car that had the front clip replaced.

I have the same issue. My car never had bezels when I bought it. I've been looking for the correct bezels for 8 years. Good luck

There are actually two different size headlight doors. You have a late 68 header panel and early 68 doors. You should be able to trade these early doors for late 68 though 82 doors. PM me I'll help you.

Thanks but no one will want these doors in trade. Both left and right have repairs, and one is a little warped. I looked into new ones, no mention on any suppliers site of different sizes. $250 each YIKES.

That does not surprise me, most 68 owners do know that there was two different sizes. As near as I can tell some where around Jan 68 chevy changed the door size making an early 68 to a late 68.

DEFINITELY! While I know "investment" collectors like 68s from everything I read they were filled with problems that greatly annoyed drivers and mechanics.

THose look just like my early 68 doors. Good luck. Even more of a problem is finding the correct early pot metal headlight bezel. they changed the sizes but kept the part numbers the same

and i think the problem is he needs later bigger stuff. somebody must have either replaced hood surround or bought early 68 doors when he needed late ones.

My late March 26,1968 Coupe had the smaller doors.
My actuator tubes pointed outward. Lou.

There were several changes in the headlamp door system in the March time frame. The doors were one, the other were the actuators that move the doors up/down went from both vacuum tubes seen with the hood open pointing to drivers fender plus offset from center of the actuator to drivers side. To were each actuator is pointing to its associated fender with the tube centered. Also the hoses went from thin wall the a thicker wall design. First photo is early design 2nd is later design.

Tell me about it. I don't know how many times I have been researching something to find out "Oh but in 68 it was different".
Its like 68 was the prototype then they fixed it throughout the next year or so.

My 68, which is an October 67 build, has the actuators in the second photo (where each actuator is pointing to its associated fender with the tube centered.) 1968 is simply a weird creature when it comes to its pieces and parts....
