Put my vin number in and forum answer was that is was not a valid number. Took off car and verified with insurance policy. mine is a 79 the 5th and 6th numbers on the vin sticker has 89. Wonder what's up with that.
Nothing mysterious about the 5th and 6th digit. The 5th is the engine and the number 8 means it is the base motor L48. The 6th is the year and you have a 79 so the number is 9 which is correct. Would help if you posted the full number to indicate where the problem is?
I see nothing wrong with that VIN, The 1st digit shows it is Chevrolet. the Z says its is a Corvette, the 87 says it is a coupe. We already covered the 89 in the 5th and 6th position. The S says it was assembled in St. Louis and the remainder of the VIN is the production sequence. What do you mean by someone told you there is a problem with the VIN????
You are assuming whatever site you are referring to has information going that far back. I just tried you VIN on another site and the error was that nothing prior to 1981 works. Starting in 1981 they went to a 17 digit VIN you have a 13 digit VIN. If you want information about your car try joining the NCRS for one year. They have a historical document service.
sorry it's in the TOOL portion on the top of this site VIN DECODER.
The very last line of the Forum's decoder says "We support 17-character VINs from 1981 to the present.". I'm thinking they need to move that info to a more prominent position, like near the top!
