I have been a lurking sponge on here for awhile. I have a 1980 that, due to me trying to fix "the easy way" has led to a complete engine rebuild!!!!! Ain’t that always the way it starts???? Now to my question.....after getting the engine back together I put a replacement water pump on. The pump is hitting the timing cover "timing mark?", for lack of a better word, from a bolt on the back of the water pump. My engine guru thinks I may have got the wrong timing cover back from the machine shop. Is there a way to tell if this is the correct cover for this engine? Is there a thick and thin timing cover? I will post pics later on......
the plate on back of water pump is supposed to have bolts with thin heads so they don't stick up off the back of the pump and hit the timing cover. if it is a bolt or two, buy bolts with smaller heads or take right angle grinder and trim the bolt down a bit. or borrow bolts from the old water pump. also check pulley alignment. mebbe could get away with double gaskets to space pump a 16th or so forward. changing timing cover is oil pan and balancer off. last choice...
It maybe grinder time double D.....I DO NOT want to take off cover and oil pan!!! I did go by the parts store. Spoke with a hotrodder named Larry who suggested one with a longer/wider mounting points. It is for a 80 Camaro. It fixes my space issue but creates more fitment issues....pulley placement and heater hose routing just to name a few.
Can anybody else confirm that a 1980 timing cover is supposed to have that tube? I cant find it anywhere.
To the OP where is the timing tab with the marks?
I'm beginning to wonder about the cover too.
I can not find an image of a C3 Corvette with that tube. Link below is for a 1985 truck. http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=498127
You may want to call the machine shop.
MilWff this seems to solve my problem.......dammit, was hoping that wasn’t the problem.......now just to figure out the best way to fix it. With tearing it down being the last thing I want to do.......

IIRC, trucks with those have Long WP ... Long pump body legs ... stands off forward from timing cover.
Pull the pump ... grind-cut ONLY the tube off ... remaining tab has your zero ... Verify with sp hole TDC stop ... that your damper & tab coincide w/ True TDC.
I was thinking about doing that Jackson. It will get done today sometime. Thanks for y’alls input on this. Sometimes you just need a sounding board........

There's a real possibility ... perhaps likelihood ... that tube-tab's Zero is in wrong position for your damper's mark ... photos below
Cover looks wrong to me. That tube is not used for timing or anything else on your engine. The timing marks would be wrong for the original '80 Corvette harmonic damper. These parts are wrong.
1980 L-82 stock setup. Yours might be a little different because of the smaller diameter damper BUT this setup angle is correct. Some other vehicles use timing marks in other orientations because that is the way to SEE THEM in service. The brackets and accessories would be in different locations for different vehicles so the timing marks and balancer marks move as a pair together depending on original application. The tab on your cover is closer to 12:00 where the Corvette tab would be closer to 2:30 and close to the edge of the timing cover. Need the right cover and positively verify the balancer Top Dead Center mark actually line up at Top Dead Center.
