Default Easy way to document your consumables.

I just got new valve cover grommets that finally fit with my breathers. I was going to throw the packaging away, but realized that's the only reference, to what I brought and two years out, I'm not going to remember what I brought. Same deal with my radiator hoses. I don't know, what ones I used, as they're far from stock, so now I don't have any idea of what PN they were. So from now on, I'm going to document all the consumables I buy for this beast and I figured out, the best way to do this, is to use a blank Address book and just input the info. V for valve cover grommets, R for radiator hoses, W for Wipers and so on. I'm getting two of them. The other one is for our other cars. Just wanted to pass this idea along. Two blank spiral bound 8" addy books, ran me $10 total on Ebay. This will save me a lot of future grief!

A spreadsheet might be easier and back it up on something like google drive. I do this for my completed maintenance on my vehicles.

you could snap a pic of the box, bag or label and attach it.

agree both

and you can link the photo into the spreadsheet

I had a tire mileage claim ... my maintenance log spreadsheet left the mfg w/ no room to argue ... claim paid in full.

have these running on all my vehicles, mowers, tractor etc.

You're a guy, with too much SQL driven, string declared, field filling and design view mania on his mind! I do this ALL day long at work. I just want something to write in, that I can grab off the workbench, for God's sake!
I don't want to fire up the computer, I just want to look it up! But that is seriously funny stuff. Now get to work on the car!

PS: That is a bad *** looking front end on your d/base though, I must admit.

But do you have this inventory to deal with? That's just what fit into boxes...

Did you notice the time stamp on the screen shot? 2002

Notice the car parts are carefully boxed and labeled, but the family pictures are just laying about! We know where your priorities lie!

I put an d laptop bench, connected to house WiFi and use a spreadsheet on my main system in my office.
Everytime I do something, I put it in the spreadsheet.

Yes, I could use Access or SQL, I am a VP of IT for a not for profit, but, I value my "car" time and don't want to get hung up on code.
I take pictures of the part number, and the vendor, or i have a tab for vendors, and what I have bought from them.
if i was really motivated I would write something, and allow for pictures to be added to the DB, but frankly i have to do that all day editing other people work (my employees)
and dont care to get stuck doing this at home.

This is a hobby

I know this may seem stupid (I AM STUPID) ......but this ugly trick has saved me hundreds in Rebates and warentee stuff. I simply keep a couple empty used Kleenex tissue boxes in certain places.
Every single register receipt I get I stuff into a corresponding tissue box. One box for the C3, (it fills fast), one for the tractors, tools, pool, and one for everyday things. The soft film top that kept the tissues lined up also holds the paper register receipts in and in date order. This year I went right to the receipt I needed to get a battery charger replaced, ($100.00), a pool pump motor that was still in warentee ($290.00) and a bunch of other things. If I did not do this I know those receipts would end up in the trash.
I like the other ways mentioned too. I keep a list of stuff like that under “Notes/ Vette etc... on my I phone as well.

Ya know, I think F22's "little black book" is very good idea ... keep that in the car ... but draw from it to maintain the spreadsheet /dbase.

I save all the receipts for my 73 in a large mailing envelope, that is hidden. If my wife knew how much I have spent on Molinda, I would end up sleeping in her. Oh, and I don’t ever intend to add up all The money I have spent...this is a hobby!

I never understood why men try to hide what they spend on their cars/hobby from their wives. What else do you hide?
