Hardtop - side mounting location pic request
Hardtop owners - I have a hardtop that I'd like to mount on my 69. The car never had one previously, so the side mount hardware will have to be installed.
I was able to find a pic of the 'side mount on an installed top, but I'd like to see some pics of how the mount is installed on the rear deck lid before I go drilling any holes.
I'm curious also. I've never had the hardware and I'd like to see what it all looks like. Not that I even remember the last time I had the hardtop on my 68.
Not my photo but I had to do the same on my 69. You actually have to drill 3 holes, one in each corner and one in the center deck lid. You will want that center hole for it to sit and seal correctly. My advise is mount the roof get everything nice and tight mark the holes take the roof back off and drill.

Thanks for the pic. I was cleaning up my hardtop today and found a similar nut still attached to one of the brackets that's screwed into the hardtop. It was only about the diameter of a nickel and the bolt screwed into it wasn't like the ones I've seen the venders selling The one in the pic looks about the size of a quarter.
As for the middle screw, I'm going to see how the top fits before drilling a hole in the middle of the deck. I've read that for some members the fit is good without that middle bolt.

68s didnt have that middle bolt so I've been running mine without it. there is a gap but you dont notice it and it isnt a big deal if its garage kept.
You may want to invest in those vinyl strips that go between the body and the top. The weight of the top and its rubbing will leave a mark on the deck. Mine shows the wear pretty significantly
I agree on the side bolts ( a MUST, or it may become airborne. Ask me how I know). With that said, I would be careful drilling into the center of your decklid for that center bolt. 68 and I think most, if not all 69s did not have that. Check your hardtop to see if it has the receiver in the middle under the rear glass. Many do not.

Agree with that as well. They are about 30 bucks and come in clear or black. Well worth it.
Here are some pages from the AIM that I hope will help. I bought my hardtop in 75 when GM announced there would be no more convertibles. It has spent most of its life in storage.
Note 7 on page A6 instructs how to locate the hole in the middle of the deck without scaring the deck with the bolt. It worked for me.

Thanks Pete (and everyone else)!
I ordered the hardware today. Now I have to decide if the top will be painted body color or covered in black vinyl.
My nov built 69 does not have the hole in the rear deck.
seems to be fine without it. The plastic is well worth a try.
mine got marked up the first time I put it on. This year I
am trying the covertabile top latch pins in place of the studs.
they end up really close to the folded up top. Not sure if I
will work though. You will like it ,it tightens up the whole car.
One other note. If your 69 is an early build it may have the 68 receivers on the deck lid. If you do, you cannot use the straight studs and will have to use the soft top pins.
FWIW, I completely (and more) agree with the advice you've been given about protecting your rear deck's paint with a plastic insulator.
Know that the soft top and the hard top each set on a different line when mounted, therefore, you might want to consider having the newer 3M protectant (or equivalent) film installed across the entire deck. It does a great job of protecting against soft/hard top witness marks and is almost invisible too. Have it wrapped around the deck's returns and you'll never see where to film stops. The film doesn't need to be put on/taken off when you change tops and if you ever want to remove it, you certainly can do that without damage to the paint.
So? Does anybody sell the side attachment assemblies as a kit? My 68 doesn't have an holes in the side, No holes in the middle either, but I just wouldn't do that.
Does anybody have pictures of the bracket(s) on the hardtop?
What is the kit called if searching for it? Any links?
