I am getting ready to have a new fuel tank assembly installed in my 78 and would like to know since the fuel vapor canister was removed before I purchased the Vette can I cap off the left line that leaves the left hand side of the sending unit????
personally i'd recommend you find one from someone that is parting a car and install it. They don't rob hp and the help prevent the car and garage from smelling of raw gas.

How is your system going to vent? The original gas cap is non-vented and the tank was designed to vent through the canister.

The 1970 Corvette (49 state) had the same sealed fuel system as the 71 and later Corvettes and no charcoal canister. The system just vented to the atmosphere through the fuel tank vent. Basically everything after the fuel tank vent on the 71 and later was deleted on the 70. 1970 CA Corvette's did get the charcoal canister.
So yes, you should be able to delete the canister and cap the vapor return line unless something on a 78 is drastically different from a 70. Yes, you will smell a slight odor of gas for about 15 minutes after parking in a garage. No a 78 will not pass emissions in some states without the canister, which might effect resale depending on who is buying. Hope that helps.

There is no fuel tank vent on a 1978, it was a sealed system and the evaporative control system did the venting. Have you ever seen what a fuel pump can do to a non-vented tank? I have!

that's exactly how a 1970 works, except instead of venting into the canister it vents to the atmosphere.
Think 1978 but instead of the hose plugging into the canister it plugs into nothing and you'll have it.
If I'm not mistaken what controls the vent on both a 70 and 78 is the rollover valve on the top left of the tank.
Hey there Melwiff,
Tx for the input so let me ask what is left hand side of the fuel sending unit line used for??
I was under the impression that is was connected to the vapor canister at the other end of the line...
I am having my new tank and sending unit installed on Tuesday so should I just leave the rubber nipple on the steel line??

As stated in the post above, if you close the line you need to use a vented cap.
I am currently using the locking cap that came with my Vette does that one happen to be a vented one??
I do have a plain black plastic one the came with the car also..
If neither one will do the job can you pls recommend one??
I have no idea what the cap you have looks like so I can't comment on it. Do not take a chance with it, i have personally seen a locking cap that had been used for years cause a 1969 tank to collapse because the tank vent valve failed.
