Default transmision problw

I have a '72 corvette, 350, 4-speed ... 103,xxx miles ... 95% original. The last few yrs when shifting out of reverse, shifter would jam, with a little wiggle it was fine & didn't do it everytime. Yesterday was getting it out of the garage and jammed up when trying to get out of reverse, took awhile to get unjammed. Took it and drove it about 10 miles, 1st & last time for season. Anyway slowed down to enter garage & went to downshift into 1st AND jammed in between gears, took awhile but was able to loosened it up and got into 1st & into garage. I'm the 2nd owner, have owned for about 13 yrs, w/ no problems until now. Suggestions where to start locating problem, easier to access from top or bottom ??... not much of a transmission person and in the 13 yrs I've gotten older and hands/legs aren't as flexible.

I would check your shifter linkage adjustment.

start with the simple things, jack it up and make sure the little bushings are still in the shifter arms ,then make sure the tool that goes in the shifter when it's in neutral goes into the slot.A picture of the tool is in your repair manual along with instructions of where to put it and how to make the tool(easy).Have some one go through the gears while your under there and see if any thing is binding or sloppy. At 100,000 miles your shifter could need a rebuild.

The bolts that hold the shift rod levers to the shifter shafts that extend out of the transmission case loosen up.

The stock shifter is really easy to rebuild as well. As a winter project you should look at buying a reuild kit and new link bushings. You'll be surprised at the improvement. While your in there, when you put it back together put the linkage in the short through hole if it already isnt. Its the hole closest to the linkage arm bolt when you put the shift linkage back in the tranny

+1... sounds like shifter issue. The Muncies are nearly bulletproof when not abused...

yes, your neutral line up is wrong due to many potential issues described already.

not much room up there to work, nearly impossible to slip that line-up tool up in there. especially with exhaust attached.. unless you have tiny hands.
but keep at it....
