Hello guys. Still another problem with my 71 bb. Recently put a small holly 600 on it. It has been sitting for about a year working on it. Fin ally got it cranked a couple of weeks ago with the help of a couple of you good people out there.
cranked it up today and backed it outside to fiddle with the timing. Shut it down and tried to crank it back up and it wouldn’t. The inline fuel filter showed no gas in it so checked gas tank which was empty. Put more gas in and tried again. No go. Pulled line off carb and turned motor over, no gas coming through line. What could have happened so quickly? Can fuel pump go out that suddenly? Any ideas? I did replace current pump a few years ago.
thanks Fred
take off the feed line from tank to pump at the pump and see if any fuel comes out, if so then the pump may be toast, could be a clogged fuel line if its been sitting a long time, may not be the problem but it's free to check vs assuming the pump is shot and wasting money on a new one.

Having no money and not much brains as a teenager I ran my tank dry quite a few times so I have experience with this.....On these old cars sometimes you need to prime the carb with gas to get it to run long enough to get it to come through the pump once you run it dry. Either squirt a little fuel down the throat or fill the carb through the vent tube and get it to fire. You should be okay.
PS I've had a good handful of carter fuel pumps fail and the only way to tell is with a fuel pressure gauge. They would still pump but only 2-3 psi instead of 7-9 psi

Thanks for the ideas. Being semi lazy I tried the easiest first. Filled the bowl it fired and kept running. Great. Wasn’t looking forward to replacing the pump. Now I can work on straightening out the timing. May need your help again.
thanks guys.
Before you buy a new electric pump, check the wire going to the pump.
It needs to be at least a #12 wire, (10 would be better). Also a #10 ground.
Many pumps have been returned as bad when all they needed was better wiring.
