So my car's steering is a little crooked and when driving an awful rattling noise comes from the wheel that only stops if I push down hard. Also open stopping or turning my rear wheels make a sort of knocking noise... not sure if this is a serious problem or something a steering alignment will solve. Car is a 78 with a tilt tele wheel.
It sounds like you need to take you car to a mechanic real quick. Stop driving it around and making the problem worse. If your steering wheel is pulling and you have a noise it's probably a wheel bearing. If you have a rear wheel noise it could be the same [Wheel bearing ] or a half shaft u-joint. Get it fixed. Cheaper before it breaks.

If your steering wheel is pulling and you have a noise it's probably a wheel bearing. So I just got my suspension re-done the knocking noise is just my new shocks breaking in. As for the wheel seems to be alignment issue due to it getting new suspension. Hopefully that's all it is but will keep thread up cause you never know with these cars.
If your mechanic told you your shocks are making a knocking noise because they are breaking in tells me YOU NEED A DIFFERENT MECHANIC!!!!!!!! shocks don't make noise unless they are broke in half. Who ever did your NEW SUSPENSION should have checked for ball joints , tie rods and wheel bearings for wear. Most places do a front end alignment when suspension parts are changed. What was done when you had your suspension REDONE? Should be on the repair sheet.
They replaced all my bushings bearings etc... my cars underside was all bone stock from 78... this mechanic is a C3 expert and they do an impecable job and give me good discounts since I'm younger. The alignment issue happend after some engine work and is most likely the culprit. I'm taking it back Friday to get aligned. Will keep you posted.

engine work has nothing to do with suspension. There is no way engine work will effect your alignment. I think this guy is taking you for a ride. Does he have any pictures of boats in his office? You may be making the payments on one for him.
The alignment issue came up after I took it to a different ship prior to all the new suspension. My cars whole rear end was bad and they definently took off my tires and whatnot to see whats up, though I elected to have a classic corvette shop fix my cars rear. If any shop screwed me it was this first 1 not planning on using them again anyway. They did fine on my engine but were very slow.

That makes more sense no. Sorry for the screwing. I think we've all been there at one point or another
For being a C3 expert ,your mechanic sure left you with a lot of problems. You better check your lug nuts before your wheels fall off, NO THIS IS NOT A JOKE!!!!!!
So got my car aligned its driving better than ever and steering wheel is straight. Only problem now is when the wheel is even the slightest bit left it makes a squeaking noise kinda sounds like re-winding a vhs. My steerting seems fine so seems like a steering column issue... y'all have any ideas. I have the titl/tele wheel.
can you determine if the noise is in the column or under the hood? theres not much in a steering column to make any noise. maybe underhood like belt or steering pump? seems like your mechanic would have caught that if it was an unusual noise?

Keep in mind, there's also a 'power steering ram', that's in the system. They've been known, from time to time, to go bad, and need a rebuild.
Has anyone checked your power steering pump. Fluid level and belt.
The squeeling noise definitely sounds like low fluid level - I would open the hood while the car is running. Then have an assistant turn the wheel hard left and then hard right to locate the origin of the trouble.
So, I'm heading back to College but I'm gonna run cleaner through my power steering system and then put in new fluid. My power steering pump was just completely replaced so I assumed new fluid would have been put in... Wish my break was longer so I could work on my car longer.
Whenever I push or hold my steering wheel down the noise stops plus it only occurs when my wheel is between the 10-11 o clock position so close to straight or when making a left.
