Is the top not unlatching from the deck lid OR is the deck lid not unlatching from the body? Two different issues.

There are two latches on each side (one for each function) controlled by rods from the handles. If you can, slide the passenger seat forward and take a look and make sure both rods are moving when each handle is pulled. If necessary, pull the rods manually and the latches should release (vice grips work well here).

The deck lid handle pulls a cable that's connected to the latches on either side. If you can grab a flashlight and squeeze into the compartment you can pull the handle and see if it's moving the cable. If the cable is broken, you may be able to remove the three bolts that secure the latch and get the deck lid open that way, then fix whatever the problem is.

These pics are of my 69. Handle on the left pulls the top cable which opens the passenger side latch. 2nd pic shows the 3 bolts that secure the latch.

OK, went put to the car and took some pics. First one shows the two different latches. Soft top latch is controlled by a rod. Deck lid catch by a cable. Second pics shows the handles and connecting mechanism. Both the rods and and the cables have cable stops installed. If one of those loosens up, it will slide on the rod/cable and things don't unlatch.

Hope this helps.

The same thing happened to my '69 a few years ago, I sprayed WD40 on the mechanisms and it eventually popped on its own. Probably hadn't been lubed in years.

May or may not be your issue.

Just remember, WD-40 is technically not a lubricant. Name stands for Water Displacer 40th formula. I prefer PB Blaster as good penetrating lubricant.

I removed and cleaned up/oiled the latch mechanism and readusted the rods. Mine would get stuck at various times. The latches were not fully retracting. Bite the bullet. Clean everything up and lube it and you will have many years of trouble free operations. Worth it. Ike

WD-40 is good for attempting to loosen rusty bolts and nuts and that's about all it's good for as it PROMOTES rust.
