Default Automatic shift linkage hitting temperature control dial

When I first got my 71 the temperature control dial for the heat/air conditioner ( big dial on the right ) was frozen. Thought it was broken but when I took the center console apart to have a look I found it was just mashed up against the shifter linkage. The dial actually works fine. I don’t really see any way to free up some space to let the temp wheel turn freely. Does anyone else have this problem?

Mine touched it as well, the console has dropped some over the years and was sitting too low. I sort of re-measured everything and added a little spacer to the brace up holding the center of the dash up, that pulled the gauge cluster up which also lifted the shift console upand oddly enough made the original holes in the saddle bracket at the front of the console fit line up again (probably for the first time in 30 years)
Anyway, depending on how Bubba you want to get, adding a piece of hard-ish foam under the front of the console (just in front of where the HVAC controls are will lift it enough to clear, it's pretty close even when it's right

You could also try shifting the console slightly to the right, wouldn't take much

Thanks for your thoughts, next time I’m in the mood to take it apart I’ll have a look at the options. What I did as a buba temp fix was slip nuts under the heater/AC control unit using them as spacers and longer screws to hold the unit in place. That lifted the controller up enough so temp wheel turns freely, still scrapes a little though...
