At a crossroads. I purchased the last car my dad restored. He passed away in a motorcycle accident in 2008. Its a 1978 Corvette with 80k on it. He installed a brand new interior and put a 81 frontend on it. The car is beautiful. I recently got an opportunity to purchase a piece of property as a vacation home. I have a 16 year old daughter and I would love to have a place that we as a family can make memories and a place I hope someday she will bring her children. Unfortunately I will need to sell the car in order to do it. I know my dad would be ok with my decision. After all family comes first. But I have no idea what the car is worth. Can any one give me a rough idea? Kbb is a joke. I don't know if the alterations to the car increased or decreased the value. I love this car more than I can possibly explain, but the reason I do is because it was my dads, and he gave me the same great memories I want to give my daughter. Any guidance would be greatly appreciated. Thank you and
God bless.
That's a great looking car. But I can't comment on value with any real certainty. I see it's a 4 speed, does it have AC? Working?
I recognize the decision's difficulty and feel the path you've chosen is most commendable. G'luck
I'm at the same point in my cars. I have 3 toys my 72, the Cobra, and the Z06. Life has changed for me over the years and the cars are just not that important. I still like them but just don't have the time. The Cobra and 72 are for sale and if someone wants the Z and the price is right that will move also. They all have some sentimental value but you can't look back. Sounds like you have a plan to sell and move on. I agree with the above around 10K price and see how it goes. Right now is not a great time to sell but you never know who is out there looking.
Your car is absolutely beautiful.
Some years ago I had something of value that I inherited from my father, it had great sentimental value to me. Once I made the decision to sell it, I realized that I had to treat the selling as a business transaction. To the buyer there was no sentimental value.
Selling this vehicle is determined more by how quickly you need the funds to buy the property. Will the land purchase be a cash deal or is the proceeds from the car sale used as a down payment.
The front and rear bumper changes make this vehicle unique, normal pricing guidelines are of no value as you discovered.
It will take a special buyer, one who appreciates the styling of an 80-82 along with the inherit advantages of a 78.
It really depends on your time frame. If you can wait for the right buyer, I don't think 10K or even 12K is out of the question, but if you need the cash now, you will probably have to settle for less. As my financial advisor keeps telling me, a collector car is not a good 'rainy day fund' because it is not very liquid, and getting your price often takes time. Good luck.
If the sell price is in the range of $7-$10k is that going to make or break the land deal? I mean long-term? Maybe you *can* figure out a way to hang on to it and still acquire the property? I guess you know your affairs best. Good luck whichever way you go?
Tough decision there Shannon, but we get it. Some times you just have to say goodbye to a special car to make room for the next phase of your life. I agree with the $10K starting price and see where it goes from there. Take lots of pictures, document it well, post it up and see where the comments and possible offers take you. Good luck with this one and enjoy the family, they grow so quickly.

David Howard
